2024 Shopify Taiwan Payment, Logistics, and Invoices Overview

2024 Shopify Taiwan Payment, Logistics, and Invoices Overview

Shopify is currently the most widely used e-commerce platform by merchants worldwide, offering a complete ecosystem of e-commerce value-added solutions (Apps) and store designs (Themes).  As of 2024, there are over 4.8 million brands globally using Shopify for their e-commerce platform, compared to 1.7 million in 2021.  These include renowned brands such as RHINOSHIELD, Netflix, Tesla, Red Bull, BBC, Nestlé, and others.

Since 2019, Ako has been organizing Shopify Meetups in Taiwan to assist Taiwanese brands in transitioning and migrating to Shopify. During this time, we discovered many merchants faced challenges with localizing their financial and logistical needs, as there were no available solutions tailored specifically for Taiwanese merchants.

In recent years, with the support and investment from various payment companies, there are now four Taiwanese payment companies capable of providing diverse integration services for Shopify.

For logistics, Akohub / AkoCommerce solutions help Taiwanese merchants integrate logistics for convenience store pickup and automatic electronic invoicing processes for their Shopify shops, helping local Shopify brands and entrepreneurs streamline their previous complex order fulfillment processes in the domestic market.

Whether you have 20+ years of experience as an e-commerce veteran or a newcomer to the e-commerce scene, knowing 'how to collect payments' and 'how to fulfill orders,' are essential pieces of knowledge to grasp from day one of operating an e-commerce business. This article aims to provide a brief introduction to Shopify's solutions for financial and logistical needs in Taiwan, giving everyone a more comprehensive understanding.

                              2. Common Shopify Payment Gateway Issues for Sellers

                              2.1. Transaction data security

Data security is undoubtedly a critical concern for all sellers. In addition to handling payments, the security of the data that consumers leave on websites is also essential. With today's online transactional security technologies, coupled with various 3D verification methods, online transactions currently offer even greater traceability and monitoring capabilities than offline transactions. This helps prevent disputes and fraud in online transactions.

                              2.2. Review application time

The time it takes to review payment gateways is often overlooked by some first-time business owners. Based on experience, the initial review involves examining the company's basic information, business status, product listings, and other details to ensure that transactions and funds promised to banks or third-party payment platforms are legitimate. This type of review typically takes 2-4 weeks. If you already have a planned website development schedule and marketing activities, it's essential to assess the time required for payment gateway reviews in advance.

                              2.3. Review product issues

Regarding the review of product types for payment gateways, this is also a common concern for merchants. Here's a list for your reference:

Restricted categories such as virtual goods, courses, eyewear, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, medical equipment, live animals, currency, pornographic or violent publications, stolen goods, counterfeit goods, fireworks, weapons, police items, lottery tickets, illegal goods, etc.

Most of the issues are related to crime and medical products, which are subject to legal restrictions.  Regulated goods may face limitations in payment gateway review. Particularly noteworthy are virtual goods, which include virtual currencies, online courses, e-books, etc. As Taiwan's regulations regarding virtual goods are not yet comprehensive, transactions involving virtual goods, especially online courses, are relatively sensitive to payment gateway review. However, there have been successful cases where complete documentation was provided to prove legitimacy. Therefore, it's advisable to consult with the service representatives of payment gateway providers to obtain more detailed information.

If you have further questions about Shopify's logistics and payment gateways, you are welcome to contact Ako for Shopify logistics consultation .

Cross-border shipping has always been one of Shopify's well-known strengths. Many established Taiwanese brands choose Shopify because they want to engage in direct-to-consumer (DTC) business in international markets. Shopify has already established direct integration with DHL and FedEx in Taiwan. By applying for DHL and FedEx accounts and entering Shopify's store code in the logistics provider's backend system, merchants can submit orders seamlessly.

                              4. Conclusion

The trend of Shopify usage in Taiwan is growing year on year, and it is directly correlated with the localization completeness of its financial and logistical solutions. As the financial and logistical solutions become more comprehensive in Taiwan, many merchants have shown high interest and willingness to switch and migrate to Shopify.
